Mosca Music Awarded for Original Music on Discovery Channel Project

CLAYTON, CA -- Mosca Music's skill at composing evocative original scores was recently acknowledged at the 1999 Joey Awards, an organization that recognizes achievement in broadcast, print, and interactive media. Mosca Music received "Best Original Score" for its work on Preemies: The Fight for Life, a one-hour documentary that premiered on the Discovery Channel in September. Notably, Mosca Music earned the award without submitting Preemies for Joey review; after the show was dubbed a Finalist in other categories, the panel of Joey judges voted to add it to the list of "Best Original Score" nominees as well.

Preemies, which was produced by San Jose company Tam Communications, follows premature infants as they struggle for survival at some of the most advanced neonatal centers in the United States. Because of its dramatic, life-and-death subject matter, the documentary required a stirring original score that could match the emotional quality of the footage and its unfolding story.

"Pat Mosca of Mosca Music was the ideal composer for this project," said Susan O'Connor Fraser, Executive Producer of Preemies: The Fight for Life. "We needed an attentive ear to craft the sound track, someone who could blend music, silence, a dramatic ambient track, and scripted narrative to enrich the on-screen subtleties and create an incredibly powerful and emotional film. Mosca Music played a vital part in making Preemies the tremendous success that it is."

In addition to its work on Preemies, Mosca Music also recently contributed its scoring and sound design services to High Seas Cops, another Discovery documentary. A reality special, this program explores the law enforcement activities of the United States Coast Guard.

Pat Mosca explained, "Reality documentaries of this kind require very precise sound treatments—often background audio embellishments rather than full music. So I worked within the existing ambient audio to heighten the tension during important moments and punctuate critical turns in the story."

Mosca is currently working on the sequel to Preemies: The Fight for Life, another dramatic one-hour special set to air on the Discovery Channel later this year.

Pat Mosca is head composer of Mosca Music, offering a full range of services including original music composition and scoring, sound design, and performance for broadcast and corporate television and live events.
